Episodes are short works of research that connect a single primary source (or a couple of related ones) to the broader historical context. The idea comes from the History Engine, a collection of episodes created by college students and housed by Richmond University.
So, for example, you might have a letter from someone that talks about how the railroad is changing their farmwork. Then you find a secondary source that describes how the railroad affected farmers in general -- the primary source is an example of what the secondary source said, or the secondary source gives context for the primary source.
